Trump announced the launch of the "most devastating" economic operation against Iran.
US President Donald Trump stated that the United States will increase economic pressure on Iran due to the lack of progress on a peace agreement.
"No one has ever given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a deal than I did. Tragically for them, they did not take advantage of it. So today, I am announcing the most devastating economic operation ever waged against any country! This will be economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale," the US President wrote on the social media platform TruthSocial.
He added that from now on, any country that provides assistance to Iran in any way "will face enormous economic consequences."
"Oil smuggling, swap lines, money transfers, money exchanges, shipping registries, shell companies—all of this must stop immediately," Trump stated.
The American leader called on US allies to stand with Washington "to isolate and defeat the Iranian threat."
"These historic measures will undermine their [Iran's] ability to spread terror around the world. Iran will never have nuclear weapons," the US president concluded.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi called Trump's statement a "distraction" and said the move "will only lead to further defeat."
"According to Araqchi, escalating this failed policy will only lead to further defeat—and Iranian hostility. US economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty around the world."
The day before, CNN, citing an American official, reported that the US president had changed his approach to Iran, abandoning negotiations and emphasizing a gradual increase in pressure on Tehran.
According to the channel, Trump instructed senior administration officials to end negotiations with Iran.
"White House officials recently told political allies they were shifting their strategy from 'hit him as soon as possible' to 'choke him out' over time," the source told CNN.
