Trump threatens 'tremendous economic consequences' on any country helping Iran

It comes after a 60-day ceasefire expired on Monday, with no sign of a diplomatic or military off-ramp to the conflict.

President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will impose "TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences" on any nation that provides assistance to or conducts business with Iran.

Writing in all capital letters on Truth Social, Trump stated he was initiating "the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country!" He did not elaborate further or identify any specific nations.

This announcement follows the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire with Iran on Monday, with no indication of a diplomatic or military resolution to the conflict that the US and Israel initiated in late February.

Trump's recent declaration appears to broaden the scope of Operation Economic Fury, a pressure campaign launched in April to sanction foreign banks or firms engaged in business with Tehran.

In his social media post on Wednesday evening, Trump announced the launch of "economic D-Day" on Iran, citing the Islamic Republic's failure to reach an agreement with the US.

"ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences," Trump asserted. He did not specify the nature of the penalties countries would incur.

Trump continued: "Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies - It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are."

The president's remarks come nearly a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US would impose an unprecedented level of economic isolation on the country.

The BBC has sought comments from the White House and the US Treasury Department.
