Turnout record broken in early voting stage of US Congressional election
With 4 days left until the 2026 US Congressional midterm elections, nearly 51 million voters have already cast their ballots. More than one-fifth of registered voters voted early. According to Bloomberg, this figure broke the 2022 record, when more than 45.9 million Americans participated in early voting.
In the 27 states where voters' party affiliation is tracked, 43 percent of early ballots were cast by Democrats, while 31 percent were cast by Republicans.
According to Michael McDonald, director of the Election Lab at the University of Florida, "voters who are voting early showed a greater inclination toward the Democratic Party." He added that on election day itself, the electorate usually leans toward the Republicans.
On November 3, midterm elections will take place in the US. In it, all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 out of 100 senators, and 36 state governors will be up for re-election. The results of these elections will determine whether Republicans can maintain control of both houses of Congress, thereby ensuring US President Donald Trump the opportunity to pursue his policies without obstacles during the remaining two years of his second term.
