Two episodes of illicit drug trafficking were thwarted in Samarkand and Khorezm regions. In total, law enforcement officers seized over 5.5 kilograms of opium.
Special operations were conducted by officers of the State Security Service jointly with customs officials and representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In the Urgut district of Samarkand region, law enforcement officers searched the house of a 53-year-old local resident. During the inspection, it was revealed that 4.988 kilograms of opium was buried in the yard. According to the SSS, the drugs were smuggled into the country.
Another case was recorded in Khorezm region. At the "Sarimoy" checkpoint, a Cobalt car traveling from Surkhandarya to Khorezm was stopped. In the car were two 37-year-old residents of Termez, who were already under surveillance by operatives.
When checking their mobile phones, law enforcement officers found information about the location where the drug was hidden. The stash was located along the A-380 international highway in the Romitan district of Bukhara region. There, 539 grams of opium were found.
According to law enforcement officers, the detainees intended to sell the drugs in Khorezm region.
In both instances, criminal cases have been initiated under articles providing for liability for smuggling and illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs.
The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier, an attempt was made to bring 52.6 kilograms of hashish and opium into Uzbekistan from Afghanistan. The drugs were hidden under the floor of an empty truck's trailer and packed in several layers to make them difficult to detect during an inspection.
