Microforests to appear in schoolyards and residential courtyards in Tashkent
In Tashkent, microforests will be planted between residential buildings, near schools and kindergartens, while shady pedestrian streets and new parks will appear in the capital's districts. The autumn sapling planting season starts on November 10, with a separate greening program to be prepared for each district.
These measures are secured by a decision of the Khokim of Tashkent as part of the "Yashil Makon" nationwide project. In addition to new plantings, the document also provides for changes in tree care, the cleaning of aryks (irrigation ditches) and canals, as well as support for residents' initiatives to green their mahallas.
One of the directions will be the creation of microforests in small areas where it is impossible to set up a full-scale park. They are planned to be placed between multi-story buildings, in the yards of schools and kindergartens, as well as in mahallas with a limited area of free land.
Plots ranging from 200 to 1,000 square meters will be allocated for microforests. It is expected that at least two saplings of trees and shrubs will be planted per square meter. Where the ground is covered with concrete or asphalt and a planting plot cannot be allocated, the plants will be placed in large flowerpots, and the area will be designed as a small community garden.
Preparations for the autumn planting season must begin in advance. The actual work will start on November 10, 2026. Until then, it is necessary to prepare the soil, put the irrigation systems in order, and perform other agrotechnical measures.
At the same time, the capital will address the condition of aryks, collectors, and canals. As part of a two-month cleanliness campaign that started on October 1, they will be cleared of garbage, and repairs will be carried out in certain areas to prepare the territories for seasonal precipitation.
Changes will also affect the care of already growing trees. Tashkent plans to introduce composting and mulching: shredded branches and other organic materials will be used to care for the open soil around trees.
In addition, starting January 1, 2027, as part of the "Green Mahalla" project, the introduction of a "Mahalla Greening" package and a "Green Lot" system is provided for. They are intended to support residents' initiatives to create green zones and involve them in planting and the further care of saplings.
To determine exactly where new green zones and landscaping work are needed, a separate program will be prepared for each district of the capital. This must be done by November 1. The programs will specify concrete sites, deadlines, funding, and those responsible for creating parks and shady pedestrian streets, installing water-saving irrigation systems, and taking care of trees.
Now, it is proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of greening not by the number of planted trees, but by their survival rate after one year, three years, and five years.
