Kyrgyzstan plans to abolish regions and districts and create aimaks

Kyrgyzstan intends to abolish regions and districts, replacing them with enlarged administrative units — aymaks. The reform is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.

Instead of 40 districts, it is proposed to form more than 20 aymaks. They will be larger than districts, but smaller than regions. When creating the new units, the authorities intend to take into account the economic and geographical potential of the territories.

As Elchibek Dzhantaev, Director of the State and Municipal Service, reported on air at the "Kabar" agency, one of the tasks of the reform is to eliminate the duplication of functions between regional and district authorities. The model for the new administrative structure is being developed by the Ministry of Economy, taking into account the specifics of the territories and their development potential.

The first stage of the reform launched in 2023. At that time, the borders of a number of districts were changed, and some settlements became part of cities.
