Kazakhstan begins negotiations with China regarding the construction of a second NPP
Kazakhstan is conducting negotiations with the China National Nuclear Corporation on the construction of the second atomic power plant — "Moyinkum". This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Republic, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, writes "Kazinform".
“Currently, the terms of the agreement and construction timelines are being discussed. We hope that the projects will be implemented by 2035,” the minister said.
The first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan — "Balkhash" — is planned to be built in the Almaty region. In September 2026, Russia's "Rosatom" company and the "Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants" organization signed a contract for the construction of two power units with a total capacity of 2.4 GW. Construction is planned to begin in 2027.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Olzhas Bektenov, issued an instruction to create a state strategic uranium reserve for nuclear power plants.
