Uzbekistan proposes reducing the duration of mandatory military service for reading books
The duration of mandatory military service in Uzbekistan may be reduced by one month for conscripts who demonstrated high results in the national book reading competition. Deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis approved the corresponding bill in its first reading.
According to the deputies, such a measure will help popularize reading among military personnel and boost their interest in literature. Furthermore, the initiative is aimed at developing the intellectual potential of conscripts.
The document also provides for the possibility of concluding new contracts with graduates of higher military educational institutions of Uzbekistan and foreign universities who have qualified as pilots. This will make it possible to attract qualified specialists to develop the country's military aviation.
Earlier, Uzbekistan approved a procedure for reducing prison sentences for reading books. For each book read, a sentence may be reduced by three days, but by no more than 30 days per year. Special commissions will verify the read literature.
