In Samarkand, young parliamentarians discussed the role of parliaments in achieving the SDGs
During the event, young members of parliaments from various countries, representatives of international organizations, and industry experts discussed the role and capabilities of the legislative branch in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level.
The session was opened by Tanzila Norbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Monitoring the Implementation of National Goals and Objectives in the Field of Sustainable Development for the Period up to 2030.
As noted, in recent years, Uzbekistan has achieved a number of results in social, economic, environmental, and institutional areas within the framework of SDG implementation. In particular, the poverty rate decreased from 17 percent to 5.8 percent in 2021–2025, and the unemployment rate fell from 10.5 percent to 5.1 percent in 2020–2025. The rate of youth enrollment in higher education reached 47.7 percent, up from 18.7 percent.
The session also discussed the main mechanisms of parliaments in implementing the SDGs. Improving the legislative framework, strengthening parliamentary control over the implementation of state programs, determining budget priorities, and broader involvement of citizens, particularly youth, in decision-making processes were noted as important tasks facing parliaments.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of the resolutions "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals" and "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating social development," which were adopted by the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Uzbekistan.
In addition, the role of young parliamentarians in promoting the SDGs, mechanisms of parliaments' work with youth, expanding youth participation in political and social processes, and developing inter-parliamentary cooperation in accelerating the achievement of the SDGs were considered.
At the end of the session, proposals were made to support the initiatives of young parliamentarians aimed at implementing the SDGs, strengthen the exchange of best practices, and utilize effective parliamentary mechanisms.
