In Samarkand, young parliamentarians discussed how to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

Parliaments must participate more actively in improving legislation, monitoring government programs, and defining budget priorities to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was stated by participants of the open session of the 12th IPU Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, taking place in Samarkand.

Special attention was paid to involving youth in political and social decision-making, as well as expanding inter-parliamentary cooperation. Young parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations, and experts also discussed mechanisms for implementing the SDGs at the national level.

During the session, Uzbekistan's results in the social, economic, environmental, and institutional spheres were presented. In particular, between 2021 and 2025, the poverty rate was reduced from 17% to 5.8%, and unemployment between 2020 and 2025 fell from 10.5% to 5.1%. Youth enrollment in higher education increased from 18.7% to 47.7%.

The session was opened by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Tanzila Narbaeva, who also co-chairs the Parliamentary Commission on Monitoring the Implementation of the National Sustainable Development Goals and Targets until 2030.

Separately, the participants reviewed the UN General Assembly resolutions, adopted at the initiative of Uzbekistan, on strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the SDGs and social development.

Following the meeting, proposals were prepared to support the initiatives of young parliamentarians, exchange experience, and utilize effective parliamentary mechanisms to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
