BMW has revealed the gasoline variant of the eighth-generation 3 Series.
The electric i3 was shown half a year ago, and now it is the turn of the classic model with an internal combustion engine. Externally, the gasoline version is almost indistinguishable from the electric variant, but there are differences, and they are significant.
At the front, the 3 Series replicates the i3 model: the daytime running lights and radiator grilles are the same, but they are darkened and look slightly wider. Since there is an atmospheric engine under the hood, the lower bumper and air intakes are more prominent. The hood of the gasoline version is slightly longer and lower than that of the i3, and the shape of the rear side windows has been changed. The shown M350 xDrive version is distinguished by black mirror housings, dark rear lights, a diffuser, and a pair of dual-barrel exhaust pipes.
Although the gasoline 3-Series looked slightly longer and wider than the i3 model in the photos, this is not actually the case. The presented 330, 330 xDrive, and M350 xDrive models have a length of 4754 mm, a width of 1849 mm, and a height of 1455 mm.
Despite the old platform, the cabin received all the updates just like in the Neue Klasse electric vehicles. Inside, there are large touch panels and an unusually shaped steering wheel, a 17.9-inch curved multimedia display, and a Panoramic iDrive system with a 3D projection display.
The instrument panel has also been redesigned: new materials, fabric, and lighting have been used, evoking the spirit of modern Mini models. The M350 xDrive version is equipped with M Sport seats with extended side supports.
Under the hood of the M350 xDrive runs a three-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The power is 437 horsepower, and the torque is 580 N·m. Paired with an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and all-wheel drive, the sedan accelerates to 96 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 209 km/h, and to 250 km/h with sports tires.
The 330 and 330 xDrive models are equipped with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 400 N·m of torque. The acceleration time to 96 km/h is 5.9 seconds, and the maximum speed is the same as the M350.
