At least 20 officers in a single strike: "Mediazona" reported a major loss for the Russian army

At least 20 Russian officers were killed as a result of Ukraine's missile strike on Donetsk on August 26. The "Mediazona" publication assessed this as the largest known single loss among the officer corps since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At least 20 officers in a single strike: "Mediazona" reported heavy losses of the Russian army

According to DW, "Mediazona" journalists identified the names of the killed military personnel and published the results of their investigation on October 9.

Of the 20 identified officers, 18 died on the day of the strike, and two more died later from their injuries. Among them were seven colonels and four lieutenant colonels.

According to the publication, the deceased served in the headquarters of the "Center" group of forces — the headquarters of the Central Military District and the 41st Combined Arms Army.

Journalists identified them by comparing the personnel lists of the two headquarters with the inheritance case register, other state registers, and obituaries about the military.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a missile strike on Russian-occupied Donetsk on the evening of August 26. At that time, head of the administration Denis Pushilin said the target was the "Donetsk City" shopping center. According to him, Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG missiles were used in the attack.

However, OSINT projects analyzing open sources suggested that the strikes might have been aimed at command posts of the Russian army.

Ukraine's Exile+ Telegram channel reported that one of the strikes hit a building where research and industrial institutions were located before the war. The "KiberBoroshno" channel reported that another target was a 600-space underground parking lot beneath an unfinished residential complex.

OSINT projects stated that both facilities might have been used by the Russian military as command posts.
