At least 13 killed in Ukrainian drone strike on Tatarstan, Russian officials say
It is one of the deadliest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia since the start of Moscow's war on Ukraine.
Russian officials have reported that a Ukrainian drone strike in the republic of Tatarstan has resulted in at least 13 fatalities.
Among the deceased was one child, and 39 additional individuals sustained injuries, according to Russian authorities. This incident marks one of the most lethal single assaults on Russia since the commencement of Moscow's full-scale conflict in Ukraine.
Kyiv has not yet issued a statement regarding the attack on Nizhnekamsk. This city is situated over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the Ukrainian border and hosts several significant oil refineries and a major petrochemical enterprise.
Local sources indicate that the strike persisted for several hours, from overnight into the morning.
Unverified footage circulating on social media depicts substantial columns of smoke and flames ascending into the daytime sky, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens.
While there is no official confirmation regarding the specific target of the attack, Kyiv has recently intensified its strikes on facilities it claims contribute financially and logistically to Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
Moscow confirmed that both industrial facilities and residential areas were targeted. Russia's Investigative Committee stated, "Civilian individuals who were not involved in any military operations were present." The BBC has not independently corroborated this information.
Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, acknowledged the strike and extended his condolences to the families of those who died.
Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev commented, "This is a tremendous pain for all of us."
Moscow reported that Russian air defenses intercepted over 450 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Kyiv has demonstrated increasing success in executing long-range strikes within Russia, frequently targeting warehouses or energy infrastructure, leading to a rise in civilian casualties.
Concurrently, Russia continues to launch regular large-scale aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities and residential centers, with casualties accumulating. Last week, a combined drone and missile strike on Kyiv claimed 21 lives.
Additionally, in Kharkiv, a city near the front line, five people were killed overnight in a Russian artillery attack.
