What is preventing Uzbekistan from developing the electric vehicle market?

And I love "Chinese cars"
Uzbekistan ranked 19th in the electric vehicle adoption ranking in 2026, ahead of Ireland, according to a report by Kept. In 2024, the Republic of Uzbekistan was in 14th position.
China took first place in the ranking with 78 points. South Korea landed in second place with 69 points, and Germany took third with 67 points. The top five also included India and the US, which received 66 and 65 points, respectively. Kazakhstan took 18th place with a score of 40 points.
Despite being the leader in Central Asia in electric vehicle manufacturing, Uzbekistan is experiencing a shortage of charging stations. In addition, the development of the electric vehicle market in Uzbekistan is hindered by the lack of local battery production and public electric transport, as well as limited government support measures for the industry.
Uzbekistan has up to 100 thousand electric vehicles
According to the study, the electric vehicle fleet in Uzbekistan ranges from 50 to 100 thousand cars. By this metric, the country is in the same group as Malaysia and Russia. For comparison, Kazakhstan has between 30 and 50 thousand electric vehicles.
In the infrastructure development category, Uzbekistan received only two points out of a possible 20. Kazakhstan scored zero points in this category.
Uzbekistan leads Central Asia in electric car manufacturing
Although the country ranked low in the overall standings, Uzbekistan became the leader in Central Asia in the production of electric vehicles and hybrids. According to Kept, projects by Chinese manufacturers BYD and Leapmotor are being implemented in the country. Their combined production capacity is 70 thousand vehicles per year. At the same time, BYD plans to increase output to 200 thousand vehicles by 2030.
Kazakhstan is also preparing for the production of electric vehicles. Projects by Li Auto and BYD are being implemented there, with mass production scheduled to start in 2027.
The Kept study analyzes the green transport situation in 30 countries around the world. The ranking took into account the number of electric cars, the development of charging stations, and government incentives. Data current as of July 2026 was used for the calculations.
