A new bridge has been completed in Sergeli over the Junariq Canal, where students previously crossed over pipes

A new bridge connecting the Junariq and Yukory Darkhon neighborhoods has been commissioned in the Sergeli district of Tashkent. This structure was opened on the eve of the start of the new school year, especially to ensure the safe passage of schoolchildren and residents across the canal.

Previously, there was a problem with safe passage across the canal in this area. Some residents, including schoolchildren, were forced to use pipes laid over the canal to shorten the route.

The new bridge is 28 meters long and 8 meters wide. Built on a solid structure, this structure can carry up to 80 tons of cargo. The total cost of the project was 1.7 billion soums.

This bridge will facilitate transport for residents of the "Yangi Choshtepa" and "Yangi Qoshnilar" residential complexes. Also, students of school No. 76, children attending preschool educational organization No. 54, and local youth can safely use it.

The problem that led to the construction of the bridge has been raised several times before. In November 2025, the Sergeli district administration announced that 1 billion soums had been allocated for the reconstruction of the bridge over the Junariq canal, which flows through the area adjacent to the Yukori Darkhon and Junariq mahallas, and that the design and estimate documents had been approved. At that time, it was stated that along with the new bridge, it was planned to organize pedestrian walkways and repair the adjacent road surface. From November 24, it was planned to close the road section for two months due to construction work.

In January 2026, the administration announced that 1.2 billion soums had been allocated for the project to build a new bridge in this area. A new structure, a safe pedestrian walkway, and new asphalt were planned.

However, by March, the situation in the area was again discussed on social media. Videos posted showed children and students crossing the canal through pipes. Users criticized the fact that the bridge had been removed and a new one had not yet been built.

On March 9, the Tashkent city administration commented on the situation in the area, stating that the area had previously been transferred from the Zangiota district to the city of Tashkent. According to the administration, two large residential complexes have been built in the area, which have their own schools and kindergartens. Despite this, some children and residents attend educational institutions on the other side of the canal.

The administration stated that there used to be a pedestrian bridge here, but it was demolished because it was in a state of disrepair. According to the official explanation, despite the fact that the bridge was intended only for pedestrians, cars also regularly used it, which led to its deterioration. The administration announced on the same day that it was planned to build a new bridge for both vehicles and pedestrians on this section.

The Sergeli district administration also reported that the relevant decisions of the Tashkent city governor on the construction of the new bridge had been adopted. It was said that construction work was planned to begin in the next 5-10 days.

This situation was also mentioned at a meeting held with the participation of the president on March 13. In January, a citizen reported that a schoolchild had fallen into the Junariq canal flowing through Sergeli and asked to restore the damaged bridge. The authorities were criticized for not paying enough attention to this appeal for two months and for a superficial response to the appeal.

On June 24, the khokim announced that two bridges were being built over the Junariq and Salara canals in the region. It was reported that the main work on one of them had been completed, while construction on the other was ongoing. On August 20, it was reported that the work on the bridge over the canal in the Junariq neighborhood was under the control of the district khokim, and that an order had been given to complete the construction in a high-quality manner and hand over the facility to the population within the specified time frame.
