A beam of a newly built bridge in Kashkadarya collapsed (video)

A video has been circulating on social networks showing a beam of a bridge under construction in the Dehqanabad district of the Kashkadarya region deviating to one side. The State Committee for Roads commented on this incident to "Daryo".

The incident occurred on August 6 at a facility within the framework of the project to reconstruct the 1255-1315th kilometer (60 km) of the M-39 Almaty-Bishkek-Tashkent-Shakhrisabz-Termez highway, during construction and installation work being carried out with the participation of the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund.

It was reported that the beams of a newly built two-level artificial structure were being installed. During the installation process, due to the fact that one side of the crane was lifted first, an excessive load was placed on the other side of the beam, as a result of which the beam broke and collapsed.

“A bridge beam (especially a prestressed concrete beam) may fail during assembly, as the load conditions it will encounter may be completely different from those for which the beam was designed. Beams are usually designed to operate vertically and transfer their weight along this axis. This situation was also confirmed by the construction consulting organization within the project,” the official statement says.

No one was harmed as a result of the incident, as well as the environment. All remedial measures were taken by the construction organization in response to the incident, and the broken beam fragments were removed from the site.

Currently, the experts of the project’s consulting engineering organization Temelsu International Engineering Services Inc. have begun an appropriate study of the causes of the incident.

Earlier, it was reported that the retaining wall of the overpass at the intersection of Temur Malik and Buyuk Ipak roads, which pass through the Mirzo Ulugbek district of Tashkent, collapsed, and that six people responsible for the construction of this road were sentenced.
