35 years of Uzbekistan's independence in numbers

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence, the National Statistics Committee published the country's main socio-economic indicators over the years of independence. According to them, since 1991, the permanent population has increased from 20.6 million to 38.2 million people, and the gross domestic product in 2025 amounted to $147.1 billion.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence, the National Statistics Committee presented the main changes in the country's socio-economic development in numbers.

**Population growth:**

* In 1991, the permanent population of Uzbekistan was 20.6 million people.

* As of January 1, 2026, this figure reached 38.2 million people.

* Over 35 years, the population has increased by 17.6 million people, or almost 85%.

**Economic indicators:**

* **Gross domestic product (GDP):** From $6.4 billion in 1994 to $147.1 billion in 2025.

* **Foreign trade turnover:** From $3.3 billion in 1991 to $82.8 billion in 2025.

* **Export volume:** During the same period, it increased from $1.8 billion to $34.2 billion.

* **Investment volume:** Increased from $1.1 billion in 1991 to $48.5 billion in 2025.

* **Construction volume:** Increased from $611 million in 1995 to $25 billion in 2025.

* **Industrial production volume:** Increased from $3 billion in 1991 to $87.5 billion in 2025.

**Education sector:**

* **Higher education institutions:** In the 1991-1992 academic year, there were 52, while in the 2025-2026 academic year, their number reached 215.

* **General secondary education institutions:** increased from 8,557 to 11,118.

**Healthcare sector:**

* **Number of hospitals:** increased from 1,388 in 1991 to 1,972 in 2024.

* **Life expectancy:** increased from 66.4 years in 1991 to 75.4 years in 2025.

**Income level of the population:**

* **Cars:** In 2010, there were 21 cars per 100 households, while in 2025 this figure reached 61.

* **Mobile phones:** The number of mobile phones per 100 households increased from 145 to 359 during the same period.

**Tourism:**

* Tourist arrivals to Uzbekistan were 1.9 million in 2012, and reached 11.7 million in 2025.

**Enterprises and organizations:**

* The number of operating enterprises and organizations was 201 thousand in 2010.

* As of January 1, 2026, their number was 474.9 thousand.
