Will Roger Federer return to the big sport?

20-time winner of the "Grand Slam" tournaments, the legendary Swiss tennis player Roger Federer is returning to the Arthur Ashe court in New York. The 45-year-old former tennis player will participate in an exhibition match as part of the US Open tournament. However, he will not return to professional sports.

Federer, who won the US Open five times in a row from 2004 to 2008, last played on this court in 2019. When reporters asked him at a press conference whether he had any plans to return to the big tournaments like the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena), Federer replied:

"No, I don't. Thank you for asking the question. If someone has that thought, it's good that we clarified the issue."

Federer stressed that he has not played a singles match since losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinals:

"I haven't played a singles match in five years. I don't know exactly how the match on August 25 will go. There are a lot of uncertainties, but I'm very happy to be back on Arthur Ashe Court, where I had some of the best moments of my career."

After his quarterfinal loss in 2019, he underwent multiple knee surgeries and was forced to retire.

"My knee couldn't take it anymore, it was tired. Mentally, I didn't have the strength to wait and be patient for a few more years," Federer said.

After this exhibition tournament in New York, Roger Federer will head to Newport, Rhode Island. A special event will be held there to celebrate the tennis player's induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
