According to the figures presented in it, the top five countries with the highest volume of freshwater withdrawal are as follows:

Rank | Country | Annual water withdrawal volume

1 | India | 761 billion cubic meters

2 | China | 581 billion cubic meters

3 | USA | 444 billion cubic meters

4 | Indonesia | 223 billion cubic meters

5 | Pakistan | 183 billion cubic meters

Here, water withdrawal refers to the extraction of water from rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers for subsequent use. This indicator does not mean that the water is completely consumed and lost: a portion of the withdrawn water returns to the natural environment.
