Where will the 2036 Olympics be held?

The number of countries competing to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games has reached seven. According to the list published by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the contenders to host the largest sporting event of the quadrennium are the following:

Other countries also have the opportunity to join this list. The deadline for submitting applications is October 31.

The final shortlist of contenders for hosting the competition will be confirmed in March 2027. The IOC plans to announce the main candidates at the end of 2028, while the final decision will be made through a vote in mid-2029.

India has applied to host the Olympics for the first time in its history.

Qatar wants to host the competition in the city of Doha. However, due to the intense summer heat, similar to the 2022 World Cup, the Olympic Games may have to be moved to the autumn season.

If South Africa wins, it will become the first African country to host the Olympics.

Some countries have already begun informal negotiations with the IOC regarding hosting the Summer Games after 2036, specifically the 2040 and 2044 Games.

As a reminder, the hosts of the upcoming four Olympics are already known: Los Angeles (USA) in 2028, the French Alps in 2030, Brisbane (Australia) in 2032, and Utah (USA) in 2034 will host the sports festival.
