Samarkand will host the World Chess Olympiad for the first time: a record number of teams is expected
On September 15, the 46th World Chess Olympiad will begin at the "Silk Road" international tourism center in Samarkand.
Central Asia will host the largest team tournament in the chess world for the first time. The World Chess Olympiad has been held since 1927.
This year, the organizers are expecting a record number of participants. 396 teams will compete in the tournament.
This will set a new record for the number of teams. The previous record was set in 2024 in Budapest, where 380 teams played in the chess olympiad.
Hosting the tournament in Samarkand will be an important event for the sport of chess and will raise Uzbekistan's international profile as a venue for major sporting events.
