Vigil held for four people injured in M9 crash

It's believed the injured family were travelling to the airport to go on holiday when the crash happened.

A vigil is being held in County Carlow for a family of four who sustained serious injuries in a collision on the M9 Northbound at Junction 3 in the Republic of Ireland. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM on Sunday.

Three women and a seven-year-old boy are currently hospitalized with serious injuries. It is understood the family was en route to the airport for a holiday when the crash took place.

The vigil is being conducted at St Clare's Church in Graiguecullen. According to Irish broadcaster RTÉ News, the church is at capacity, with additional attendees accommodated in a nearby parish centre where the vigil is being live-streamed.

Bishop Nulty commented on the community's response, stating, "People often at times like this don't know what to do." He added, "We are remembering very much the three sisters and their nephew and praying for their recovery, while also very conscious of the young boys being laid to rest." Bishop Nulty described it as "a very tough day for Carlow and the wider area."

The collision also resulted in the deaths of five teenagers who were driving the wrong way down the motorway in County Kildare in the early hours of Sunday. Bishop Nulty expressed his sadness regarding the actions of these teenagers leading up to the crash.

The five teenagers who died have been identified as Joe Carthy from Athy, County Kildare; Alex McCarthy from Carlow; Kamil Pustkowski from Limerick; Jeremy O'Brien; and Jack Kennedy.

Funerals for Joe Carthy and Alex McCarthy were held earlier on Friday in Athy and Carlow, respectively. Jeremy O'Brien's funeral is scheduled for Monday.
