Russia has once again struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles, while Iran warned of the start of a new "economic war" against the US. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump made a claim regarding the Moon.
The far-right "Alternative for Germany" party achieved a confident victory in the state parliament elections of Saxony-Anhalt.
The party received 43.8 percent of the vote. This is its highest result ever recorded in regional parliamentary elections. As a result, it will hold 39 seats in the 83-seat parliament of Saxony-Anhalt. A total of 42 seats are needed for an absolute majority.
The Christian Democratic Union gathered 17.2 percent of the vote. This was the worst result for the CDU in the history of regional elections — the party received half as many votes as in 2021 and recorded a figure even lower than its historical anti-record of 1998.
CDU leader and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a press conference in Berlin that he was "deeply shaken" by his party's defeat. "We did not expect this. We must accept the result; those are the rules of our democracy. But yesterday, something changed not only in Saxony-Anhalt, but across the whole of Germany," he said.
Thus, for the first time in the post-World War II era, far-right forces have gained the opportunity to form a government. Having failed to win an absolute majority, this party will be forced to form a coalition government. Germany's leading parties, including the CDU, adhere to a "firewall" (brandmauer) policy — this is what the refusal to cooperate with far-right parties in Germany is called. However, another party that entered parliament — the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" — expressed readiness for cooperation. This party holds 5 seats.
On the eve of the US President's envoys' visits to Moscow and Kyiv, the three-day ban on airstrikes between Russia and Ukraine expired, and the exchange of mutual strikes resumed.
