Uzbekistan: new figures on population, housing and agriculture
As of January 15, 2026, the permanent population of Uzbekistan was 39 million 47 thousand 321 people.
New data on the demographic and agrarian landscape of Uzbekistan were reflected in the preliminary results of the 2026 Population, Housing and Agriculture Census. The country's population exceeded 39 million, the urban population exceeded the rural population, and almost 1 million hectares of land previously not recorded in official statistics were identified in agriculture.
As of January 15, 2026, the permanent population of Uzbekistan was 39,047,321 people. Of these, 21,276,729 (54.5%) live in cities, and 17,770,592 (45.5%) live in villages.
In terms of regions, the population of Tashkent city is considered to be entirely urban. The share of urban population was 66.2% in Namangan region, 59.3% in Navoi region, and 58.7% in Tashkent region. In Samarkand region, the share of urban population was 39.9%, and in Khorezm region - 38.1%.
According to preliminary census data, the national composition of the country's population is as follows:

In terms of language characteristics, 91.3% of the population speaks Uzbek, 2.3% Karakalpak, 2.2% Tajik, 2% Russian, and 1.4% Kazakh.
By region, the lowest median age of the population was in Fergana region - 26.7 years. Navoi region - 27 years and Andijan region - 27.1 years were recorded next. The regions with the highest median age were: Tashkent city - 30.9 years, Tashkent region - 29.9 years, Bukhara region - 29.5 years.
According to the results of the list, 99.5% of the country's population was born in Uzbekistan. In particular, 81.5% of the 3.225 million people living in Tashkent city were born in the capital itself. The remaining 18.5% were born in other regions of Uzbekistan or abroad. In Tashkent region, 90.9% of the 3.763 million people were born in this region, 9.1% were born in other regions or abroad.
In terms of housing conditions, the majority of the population - 85.3% - lives in individual residential buildings. The share of people living in multi-apartment houses is 12.4%, in country houses - 1%, and in other types of housing - 1.4%. The share of people living in multi-storey buildings is highest in Tashkent city - 51.3%. In Navoi region, this figure is 25.4%, in Tashkent region - 18.7%.
A total of 1.03 million people work in agriculture. 50.3% of them are men, 49.7% are women. One of the most significant results was the identification of 985.4 thousand hectares of additional land resources in agriculture, which were not recorded in previous official statistics.
Overall, the preliminary results of the 2026 census provide a more detailed picture of not only Uzbekistan's demographic situation, but also its housing conditions, labor resources, land and water resources, and livestock composition.
