US prepares to tighten sanctions against Iran
The United States is preparing to impose new sanctions on individuals, companies and merchant vessels doing business with Tehran in an effort to further isolate Iran economically. Washington could add more than 60 legal entities and individuals and vessels to the sanctions list. It is also considering the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions on those working with Iran in the areas of digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and maritime transport.
The United States is preparing to further tighten sanctions by increasing pressure on Iran's economic partners. This was announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at a press conference on August 24.
According to the minister, parties that continue economic relations with Iran may face US sanctions. Bessent noted that the US Treasury Department has identified the main centers, intermediaries and networks used to illegally sell Iranian oil and circumvent existing sanctions.
**More than 60 individuals, organizations and vessels may be subject to sanctions**
The US side is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on more than 60 legal entities and individuals, as well as merchant vessels operating in various regions of the world. According to Washington, through these networks Tehran has acquired nuclear and missile technologies, received income from oil sales and carried out cyber operations.
However, Bessent did not specify which countries, companies or individuals could be added to the new "blacklist". At a press conference, he was asked whether sanctions could also be imposed on China, a major buyer of Iranian oil. Bessent did not give a specific answer, but stressed that no one should test Washington's resolve in this regard.
**Washington expects "immediate action" from Iranian partners**
The United States is demanding that countries and organizations suspected of cooperating with Iran take urgent measures to stop certain economic ties. Bessent said that representatives of the US Treasury Department, State Department and Defense Department are in contact with partner countries around the world.
Each country is planned to be given a separate period to stop certain activities related to Iran. If the specified requirements are not met, Washington will take appropriate measures. At the moment, the US side has not said how long these periods will be. It was also not announced what specific measures will be taken against individual countries that do not comply with the requirements.
