Bessent said that Washington's goal is to cut off all economic ties that support the regime in Iran. He said that the US will "tighten the noose" and cut off all possible sources of income that finance the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). "We are committed to zero leakage," he said.
US President Donald Trump has called world leaders and asked them to stop doing business with Iran, Bessent added. The US Treasury Secretary has said that any entity that helps launder money on behalf of Tehran will be removed from the US dollar system.
The day before, Bessent wrote in an article published in The Financial Times that the US has already weakened Iran's military capabilities, and now Washington is preparing for a "Doomsday" ("D-Day") for the Iranian economy. A day earlier, CNN, citing a US official, reported that Trump had changed his approach towards Iran, abandoning further negotiations and focusing on gradually increasing pressure on Tehran.
