The US has invited Putin to the G20 summit in Miami

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to the G20 summit to be held in Miami on December 14–15. This was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio while answering journalists' questions.

"We believe this will give him the opportunity to communicate not only with the US president, but also with other world leaders. We hope the invitation will be accepted," Rubio said.

He said that if people only meet with those who think like them, such meetings will undoubtedly be very pleasant, but will change nothing in terms of solving problems.

"To solve problems, you also need to meet with those who do not think like you," said the US Secretary of State.

When asked whether Moscow is interested in a ceasefire in the energy sector, Rubio replied:

"I think both sides have shown interest in a somewhat limited truce covering the grain and energy sectors. This will not solve the war problem, but I think it could help ease current global tensions to some extent."

Two days ago, Bloomberg wrote that Putin plans to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China, but might not go to the G20 summit. The agency's sources assessed the likelihood of Putin meeting Trump at the summit in Miami as "extremely low."

Putin last met Donald Trump on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. This was their only face-to-face meeting since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. No significant results were announced after the meeting.

In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly expressed readiness to meet with Putin in person to discuss ending the war. The Kremlin, however, maintains that such a meeting can only be held in Moscow.
