On the evening of September 9, Ukrainian sea drones (referred to as "unmanned boats" by the Russian Ministry of Defense) attacked the coastal zone of Sochi. According to the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar Krai, 28 people, including two children, were injured as a result. All injured individuals received medical assistance; three adults and one child remain in the hospital.
The attack became known around 9 PM local time. At that exact moment, a concert by singer Tatyana Bulanova was taking place at the "Festivalny" concert hall located on the coast. The event was suspended, and the audience was evacuated.
"My husband was at the concert. When the evacuation was announced, people started falling and running in panic. Explosions could be heard all around. He fell while running to the car. He was knocked down by a shockwave. A shockwave was felt after every explosion. The explosions occurred very close by," said one of the local residents about the incident.
Vacationers initially did not pay much attention to it and only started running in all directions after the explosions.
"Only when the explosions started happening very close did everyone start running. At first, everyone was just watching, because for Sochi, this is an unusual situation. But an explosion occurred 300 meters away from us – and only then did everyone start running. Incredible chaos ensued. Everyone was screaming, children were crying. Everyone was running, and explosions were happening around. We ran without knowing where we were going because there were no bomb shelters anywhere. We managed to reach an underground passage," one of the eyewitnesses recounts.
Following the attack, a fire broke out on the coast, but local authorities stated that the damage was not serious. "It is necessary to restore windows and facade elements. I am sure we will manage this quickly," the city's mayor, Andrey Proshunin, wrote on his Telegram channel. He also announced that the beaches would remain closed to visitors until the consequences of the attack are fully cleared. "In the rest of Sochi, the situation is stable," Proshunin added.
