Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced that Russian air defense systems repelled a massive attack by Ukrainian drones aimed at Moscow. He stated that a total of 1,600 drones attacked overnight, 450 of which were shot down on their approach to Moscow. "The unprecedented attack was planned to disrupt the election. The enemy failed to achieve this," Sobyanin added.
September 20 is the third day of elections in Russia. As in the rest of the country, State Duma deputies are being elected in Moscow. In the Moscow Oblast, elections are also being held for the regional duma. The Moscow government portal reported that the third day of elections in the city "started in normal mode."
Damage was recorded on the territory of the Moscow Oil Refinery (MNPZ) in Kapotnya. Photos and videos taken by eyewitnesses show a fire on the enterprise's territory. This refinery is among the largest oil refining enterprises in the country. MNPZ is the main fuel supplier for the city of Moscow and the Moscow Oblast. The enterprise has previously been targeted by Ukrainian drones several times.
Analyzing photos and videos taken by eyewitnesses, the Astra publication suggested that one of the strikes on this refinery might have been caused by the operation of Russia's "Pantsir" anti-aircraft missile system.
One of the drones hit a residential building in Moscow. Sobyanin did not specify the address, but he had previously stated that a building in the Orekhov Avenue area was hit.
The report of the Governor of the Moscow Oblast, Andrey Vorobyov, stated that on the morning of September 20, air defense systems and electronic warfare equipment neutralized 249 Ukrainian drones in 17 districts of the oblast.
According to Vorobyov, two people were killed (residents of the Orekhovo-Zuyevsky and Ramensky districts), and about 20 others were injured. Three children are among the injured. Fifteen of the injured were hospitalized, and another six received medical assistance at the scene.
According to him, the most severe consequences were observed in the Ramensky district. On the Shosseynaya highway, a drone hit the roof of a 21-story residential building, causing a fire. 400 people were evacuated. 20 cars were damaged. In the village of Sofino, six apartments were damaged as a result of a Ukrainian drone hitting a three-story building.
