Two people killed in 'massive' Ukrainian drone assault on Moscow region, Russia says
At least two people were killed and six others injured in a "massive" overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyev said.
Vorobyev said 249 drones had been shot down, and added that fires broke out in several residential homes. A local warehouse also caught fire. In Moscow, an oil refinery was damaged, and flight restrictions were in effect at two airports.
Earlier, a Ukrainian official said seven people, including two children, were killed in Russian attacks on the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday.
Russia and Ukraine have recently stepped up their strikes, hitting energy-producing and transport infrastructure, as well as major logistics hubs.
In a Telegram post on Sunday, Vorobyev said a 44-year-old woman was killed in Sofyino after a drone struck a three-storey residential building. He said another five people, including two children, were injured.
In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man died after a private house was hit, the regional governor said.
Videos have appeared on social media that allegedly show explosions in the night sky over the Moscow region, as well as a burning warehouse. The BBC has not verified the footage.
Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said a drone hit a building near one of the capital's boulevards and damaged a facility at an oil refinery.
He had earlier said that 152 drones heading toward Moscow had been shot down.
Sheremetyevo, Moscow's largest airport, warned passengers of "temporary restrictions", while at Vnukovo airport in the capital all arrivals and departures were suspended.
In Ukraine, a mother and her two young children, a boy and a girl, were killed in Saturday's Russian attack on the city of Fastiv, Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko said.
He added that several private houses were also damaged.
In the north-eastern Sumy region, four people were killed when a Russian drone struck the car they were travelling in, top local official Oleh Hryhorov said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
