Two releases of solar plasma may reach Earth on September 8 and 9. Two releases of solar plasma could reach Earth on September 8 and 9. This could lead to prolonged geomagnetic disturbances and weak to moderate magnetic storms, according to the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISTP SB RAS) Solar Astronomy Laboratory.
As specialists note, several plasma releases have been observed on the Sun for several days now. Calculations show that at least two of them are capable of reaching Earth within the next 24 hours.
Prolonged geomagnetic disturbances are expected. Their strength could reach the level of weak to moderate magnetic storms.
At the same time, the probability of stronger storms is currently considered low. However, solar activity still remains high.
If new plasma releases occur, the forecast may change. Specialists may detect the first signs of changes in solar wind speed as early as the evening of September 7.
According to scientists' calculations, the geomagnetic situation could remain unstable for at least three days.
