Two killed in 'violent incident' at school near Berlin
Police have arrested a man after an incident in which two people were killed including an 18-year-old.
A violent incident at a school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, a town close to Berlin, has resulted in two fatalities.
Local media outlets have identified one of the deceased as an 18-year-old high school student. The second victim, a 30-year-old man, reportedly died while attempting to intervene in the situation.
A male suspect has been apprehended. Authorities have not yet confirmed if he was a student at the private Docemus school.
Brandenburg police announced on social media that an individual had been detained "following an act of violence" and that the crime scene was being secured. Maz Online reported that the suspect is believed to be 19 years old and the former boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim.
Michael Kunz, the managing director of the school, stated that classes for Friday have been canceled. He informed local media, "Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot and will not provide any information regarding the specific circumstances and sequence of events at this time."
Despite the cancellation of regular classes, Kunz confirmed that the school would remain open for students who wish to attend. He explained, "We want to provide them with a safe space where they can come together, talk to each other, and process what has happened." He added that a "very careful" decision would be made in the coming days regarding the future structure of school life.
This incident follows a separate attack last month at a secondary school in southern Germany, where two girls were seriously wounded and a 16-year-old suspect was arrested.
