Two injured in stabbing attack at Canada Sikh temple

One suspect is in custody, but police have not disclosed a possible motive.

A stabbing incident at a Sikh temple in Edmonton, Canada, early Friday morning resulted in two injuries and an arrest, according to police.

Authorities reported that the assault occurred within the Nanaksar Gurdwara at approximately 5:00 AM local time (12:00 BST). The suspect's identity and the motive behind the attack have not been disclosed by the police.

This incident follows last week's confirmation by police that they were investigating threatening phone calls made to two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, a city located two hours south of Friday's attack site.

The World Sikh Organization of Canada expressed profound concern over the attack, noting it takes place amidst an increase in anti-Sikh sentiment nationwide.

The organization characterized the alleged assailant as an "intruder" who entered the Gurdwara and assaulted individuals inside. They also reported that a copy of the Sikh scripture within the temple was reportedly desecrated.

In a statement, the World Sikh Organization confirmed, "Police are currently on scene and the Gurdwara has been closed to the public while the investigation continues."

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas denounced the threats made in his city via a social media post, labeling them "utterly disgusting." Farkas emphasized, "Gurdwaras are places of hospitality, generosity and service. Everyone is welcome."
