There is only me…

In Kyrgyzstan, people have begun to marry less frequently and divorce more often

There is only me…

In Kyrgyzstan over the past five years, the number of officially registered marriages has noticeably decreased, while the number of divorces, on the contrary, has grown.

In 2021, 50.7 thousand marriages were registered in the country, and by 2025 their number had decreased to 43.3 thousand. Thus, the indicator declined by about 14.6%. At the same time, the number of divorces increased from 12 thousand to 14.2 thousand, or by approximately 18.3%.

A long-term downward trend in marriage rates emerged right after the surge in 2021. At that time, 50,747 marriages were registered in Kyrgyzstan. In 2022, their number decreased to 48,232, in 2023 — to 45,495, and in 2024 — to 45,033.

The opposite dynamics were observed with divorces. In 2021, there were 12,037, in 2022 — 12,187, in 2023 — 12,552, and in 2024 already 13,042.

While in 2021 there were approximately 4.2 registered marriages per divorce, in 2025 there were already about three.

The new data were included in the "Demographic Yearbook of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2021–2025", prepared by the National Statistical Committee. The collection also presents indicators for birth rate, mortality, migration, and changes in population structure.

At the same time, the statistics themselves do not explain the reasons for the changes in family behavior. The dynamics can be influenced by the age of marriage, migration, the economic situation, changing attitudes toward official registration of relationships, and other social factors.

A similar situation is observed in Uzbekistan. According to the National Committee on Statistics of the Republic of Uzbekistan, from January to June 2026, 92.3 thousand marriages were registered in the country — this is 3 thousand fewer than in the same period of 2025. Meanwhile, the number of divorces continues to increase. Over the six months, 24.8 thousand marriage dissolutions were registered, which is almost 1.5 thousand more than a year earlier. Most of the divorces still occur in cities: 14.9 thousand cases, or 60.1% of the total number. Tashkent accounted for the highest number of marriage dissolutions. In rural areas, 9.9 thousand divorces were registered.
