The Nobel Foundation has increased the prize amount for 2026

The Nobel Foundation has increased the prize amount for 2026 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the award. This was announced on the official website of the foundation.

The prize amount was increased by 1 million Swedish kronor, which is approximately 101 thousand dollars. Following this, laureates will receive 12 million kronor — about 1.2 million dollars — for each category (previously, the prize amount was 11 million Swedish kronor).

"By increasing the monetary amount, we support the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that its financial value is preserved over time," said Hanna Stjärne, Executive Director of the foundation.

The Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901. In 2012, the foundation reduced the amount of the cash prize in order to strengthen its financial position, and subsequently increased it several times.

The Nobel Prize is awarded for major scientific research, important discoveries, as well as significant contributions made by individuals to the development of culture or society.

In his will, Alfred Nobel designated the prizes to be awarded to representatives of five fields: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and contributing to the establishment of peace in the world.

In 1968, the Central Bank of Sweden also established the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

The names of the 2026 Nobel Prize laureates will be announced from October 5 to 12.
