The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day. This was announced on the official page of the ministry on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter).

The congratulatory post reads: “We sincerely congratulate all our friends in Ukraine on Independence Day!”

Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence on August 24. It was on this date in 1991 that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Act on the country's independence. This decision was supported by more than 90 percent of the population in a nationwide referendum held on December 1 of the same year.

Diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and Ukraine were established in 1992.

In 2022, when the 30th anniversary of relations was celebrated, Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted in his congratulatory message to Volodymyr Zelensky: “This month, we celebrate an important date in the history of our bilateral relations - the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. There is no doubt that Uzbek-Ukrainian relations, based on the principles of traditional friendship and mutual respect, will continue to develop thanks to our joint efforts.”

In March 2022, after the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov officially announced that Uzbekistan recognized the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, but not the Donetsk and Luhansk republics.
