Over the past years, activists around the world have fought against Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands. Along this path, some of them were killed by the Israeli military, and some were imprisoned. Our protagonist today, American Rachel Corrie, also died at the age of 23 after being run over by an Israeli bulldozer.
Rachel Corrie was born in 1979 to an ordinary family in Washington State. After graduating from school, she studied humanities in college. In her free time, she worked as a volunteer in the state conservation corps. Later, Rachel joined the ranks of activists who wanted peace to prevail in the world and became a member of the International Solidarity Movement organization.
This organization was founded in 2001 by Palestinian Ghassan Andoni, George Rishmawi, Israeli Neta Golan, and US citizen of Palestinian origin Huwaida Arraf, with the aim of providing assistance to the suffering Palestinian people.
Rachel traveled to Palestine with the movement's activists, lived with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, participated in protests against Israel, and opposed the demolition of Palestinian shelters. One of these trips ended tragically. Israeli soldiers brutally killed Rachel Corrie while demolishing a Palestinian home in Gaza.
In March 2003, Rachel went to Rafah. At that time, Israel was rapidly demolishing Palestinian homes. Rachel and her companions aimed to convey the situation in Rafah to the international community and stand against Israeli violence. Rachel lived with Palestinians in Rafah and saw everything with her own eyes.
On March 16, when an Israeli bulldozer prepared to demolish the home of a Rafah family, Rachel fearlessly stepped in front of the giant machine. Then, the Israeli soldier steered the bulldozer toward the girl. Rachel did not run away and continued to resist. The Israeli military openly drove the bulldozer over the girl, crushing her to death.
