For the first time in the history of medicine in Uzbekistan, a unique simultaneous liver and kidney transplant was successfully performed at the National Medical Center on a single patient.

The patient, a resident of the Samarkand region, had been battling a serious liver disease for eight years, and for the last four, had been suffering from end-stage renal failure requiring regular hemodialysis.

The woman's condition gradually worsened. Her family tried to raise funds for treatment abroad, even putting their house up for sale, but they were unable to secure the necessary funds. In India, where she was recommended for the surgery, treatment, including finding a donor, was costly.

After contacting the National Medical Center and undergoing examination, doctors discovered that in addition to severe kidney damage, the patient had developed cirrhosis of the liver caused by hepatitis C.

According to specialists, in such cases, a single organ transplant might not produce the desired result. A simultaneous liver and kidney transplant was deemed the most effective solution.

The surgery was successful. Doctors emphasize that such complex interventions are only performed in countries with highly developed transplantation technologies. The patient is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is gradually returning to normal life.
