Taxi, payments, and online stores: Large-scale outages occurred following an attack on Yandex data centers

According to DW, on the night of October 11, Ukrainian drones attacked the third-largest of Yandex's six major data centers — a facility in the city of Vladimir. Following this, complaints regarding the operation of various services were recorded on the monitoring websites "Sboy.rf" and Downdetector.

Users experienced difficulties in accessing "Yandex Pay," "Yandex Games," "Yandex Go," and "Kinopoisk" services.

Problems related to ordering a taxi were also reported by users in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Serbia.

The outages were not limited to Yandex services alone. Issues were also observed in accessing the resources of the "Vkusno - i tochka," KFC, and "Dodo Pizza" chains, the Lamoda online store, the Sports.ru portal, and the "Pyaterochka," "Magnit," and "Lenta" retail chains.

Additionally, complaints were reported by users of Pulkovo Airport in Saint Petersburg, the Flowwow flower delivery service, the "Cian" real estate platform, and the "Dom.ru" internet provider.

Sinocare, a company that manufactures products allowing people with diabetes to monitor glucose levels online, also reported experiencing problems with its services.

Following the attacks, the support service within Yandex applications also ceased to function. The company recommended reaching out to the official social media pages of the services to ask for assistance.

In order to reduce the load on the system, certain cloud services, including some functions of "Disk," were intentionally disabled.

On the evening of October 11, Yandex announced that its services were being gradually restored.

"Access to Alice, search, Yandex Maps, taxi, mail, and other services is being restored. However, some of their functions are not working for now," the company stated in a declaration.

Yandex first reported attacks on its facilities on October 9, following drone strikes on two consecutive nights. The company stated that a data center in the city of Sasovo, Ryazan region, was "severely damaged," and part of the infrastructure in Kaluga was put out of action.
