Tashkent may increase the tariff for drinking water

In Tashkent, it has been proposed to raise the tariff for drinking water to 3,100 soms per cubic meter. This issue has been submitted for consideration to the Tashkent City Kengash of People's Deputies. Representatives of "Uzsuvtaminot" JSC announced this at a press conference on October 30.

The reasons for the proposed increase were not disclosed at the event.

The tariffs were last revised in 2023. In October, "Toshkent shahar suv ta'minoti" JSC proposed increasing the cost of drinking water for the population from 400 to 1,400 soms per cubic meter. The initiative was explained by the rising expenses of the water supply organization. On November 24, the City Kengash approved the new rates, which came into effect on December 9, 2023.

Since April 1, 2024, for certain categories of consumers, the tariff including VAT has been 1,568 soms per cubic meter. In particular, this rate applies to residents of the private sector and new buildings without centralized hot water supply.

At the same time, in the Tashkent region, the tariff for the population has already reached 3,100 soms per cubic meter. Local authorities previously explained the increase in expenses by the rising costs of electricity, taxes, foreign loan servicing costs, labor remuneration, as well as the repair and modernization of water supply systems.

The procedure for revising tariffs is regulated by the law "On Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal." Under the current procedure, proposals from water supply organizations are reviewed by authorized bodies, and the final decision is made by the City Kengash of People's Deputies.

Starting January 1, 2027, the authority to approve tariffs for drinking water and sewerage is planned to be transferred to the Interdepartmental Tariff Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers.
