Russia insists on optimizing the process of transferring convicts between CIS countries

Russian Justice Minister Konstantin Chuychenko has called on CIS countries to optimize procedures for transferring sentenced persons to serve their sentences in their home countries.
"The Russian Ministry of Justice is systematically working to optimize the procedures for transferring sentenced persons to the states of their citizenship. Our common goal is to make the process of interagency coordination and transfer as prompt, clear, and transparent as possible," the Minister said, speaking last week via videoconference at the opening of the 11th meeting of the Council of Heads of Penitentiary Services of the CIS Member States, which was attended by representatives of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Chuychenko emphasized that relevant international treaties have been concluded with the CIS member states.
The head of the Ministry of Justice also noted that the practice of transferring persons sentenced to deprivation of liberty to serve their sentences in their home countries "is of paramount humanitarian importance, contributes to a more effective correctional impact, helps restore and strengthen their social ties with relatives, and aids in resocialization after release." According to Chuychenko, all of this makes it possible to achieve the main goal of punishment — preventing new crimes and ensuring public safety, TASS reports.
