The States of Alderney has issued an expression of interest to convert two island sites into housing.

The former Old Connaught site in Royal Connaught Square and States-owned land at Le Val have both been put forward.

Island leaders said the sites were hoped to be developed into independent living accommodation to help meet housing needs on the island.

Iain MacFarlane, chair of the Housing Working Group, said: "No decision has been taken to proceed with either development, but these expressions of interest are an important step in exploring the options available to us."

The States of Alderney said the need for more housing on the island was driven by a limited supply of affordable homes, the island's ageing population, and demand from key workers and full-time working residents.

MacFarlane said: "Housing remains one of the key issues facing Alderney, and we need to look at a range of options if we are to increase the type and number of homes available."

**The Old Connaught building is located in Connaught Square**

The Old Connaught Building is the former Royal Connaught Care Home site, and it has been unused for several years.

The States has asked developers and investors to look at opportunities for a residential-led redevelopment, either through a long leasehold arrangement or by purchasing the site.

Any plans would need to preserve and restore the listed principal building, part of Royal Connaught Square and the St Anne Conservation Area.

**La Val field has been States-owned since 2025**

Le Val field was bought by the States in 2025 with the aim of supporting health and social care provision.

Le Val is next to the existing Jubilee and Connaught care facilities.

The States said it was seeking interest from a development partner to explore options for additional sheltered or assisted-living accommodation.

If a partner is chosen, it would work with the government and existing care providers to identify the island's current and future needs before drawing up plans for a possible development.

The site could offer independent living with minimal support, through to more supported accommodation to help residents live independently for longer.
