Signs of a pedophile: Is it possible to recognize them in advance?

After every crime related to pedophilia, society is shaken. We talk about the victimized child's fate, psyche, and future, and we demand that the criminal be punished. But how much do we think about protecting the child, noticing the danger, and preventing it before the crime occurs? Who is a pedophile? How do we recognize them? Kun.uz spoke with clinical psychologists around this topic.

Signs of a Pedophile: Can They Be Identified in Advance?

Can pedophilic tendencies be identified in advance? Is it possible to recognize such a person by their appearance or behavior? How should people who work with children be screened? Most importantly, what should a child be taught to protect them from danger?

**Pedophiles choose places where there are many children**

Elchin Tolibov notes that pedophilia is one of the conditions present in the international classification of diseases. Pedophilia does not always manifest itself openly. Therefore, it is not easy to determine whether a person has such a tendency based on external behavior. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines diagnostic criteria specific to pedophilia. It takes into account the individual's age, the age difference with the child, and other factors. In assessing such a condition, tendencies and behavior observed over a certain period of time are also taken into account.

"In fact, individuals prone to pedophilia first of all try to find themselves more in that environment. For example, zones where there are children: they try to find schools, kindergartens, environments with many children, and they tend to operate more in those very places. This is considered one of the first criteria. And as an addition, we can say that people prone to pedophilia are often prone to deception, or it often co-occurs with other behavioral disorders.

Until now, scientists and research have not been able to reveal the exact causes of pedophilia. There are various hypotheses. There is even a theory and research showing that people who were themselves victims of sexual abuse in their childhood have a higher risk of developing a tendency toward pedophilia. First of all, we must take this into account. Secondly, living in an environment of extreme violence. This can be sexual, it can be physical violence. Living in such an environment of violence can also increase a person's tendency toward pedophilia, specifically regarding children," he says.

**"Psychodiagnostics is needed for specialists being hired by kindergartens and schools"**

According to Guli Turayeva, in order to prevent danger in institutions working with children, the issue of introducing a deep clinical-psychological assessment into the hiring process should be considered.
