On August 13, 2026, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) announced the establishment of its 60th national network – SDSN Uzbekistan. The new structure will be coordinated jointly by the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRR) under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), located in Tashkent, according to SDSN.

Umid Abidkhodjaev, Director of IMRR, and Sodik Safoev, Rector of UWED, have been appointed co-chairs of SDSN Uzbekistan. This network will be the second national SDSN structure in Central Asia, following SDSN Kazakhstan.

SDSN emphasizes that Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, as the countries with the largest populations and economic potential in the region, can play a key role in developing cross-border cooperation, knowledge sharing, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia.

The establishment of SDSN Uzbekistan demonstrates the growing interest of universities, research organizations, government agencies, civil society institutions, and other partners in working together on sustainable development. The network's priority objectives include promoting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

SDSN Uzbekistan will develop local solutions, facilitate the formation of long-term development models, knowledge sharing, and the development of cross-sector collaboration. SDSN aims to accelerate sustainable development in Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries.

Eight institutions in Uzbekistan are currently members of SDSN. They will have the opportunity to participate in network programs, including SDG Academy, SDSN Youth, and SDGs Today. In addition, participants will have access to SustainChain, a closed SDSN platform for a community of professionals and organizations working in the field of sustainable development.

The formation of the national network was preceded by discussions between the Institute for Sustainable Development and the SDSN leadership. On July 11, 2026, the Institute held a meeting with SDSN President, Professor Jeffrey Sachs. Representatives of SDSN member institutions, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, and other interested organizations participated in the event. Participants discussed further strengthening cooperation in the field of sustainable development.

In total, SDSN currently unites 47 national and 13 regional networks. Each is coordinated by one or more organizing institutions, which provide a secretariat, bring together universities and organizations in the respective country or region, and facilitate the implementation of SDSN programs.

The main objectives of the national and regional networks include mobilizing support for the Sustainable Development Goals, assisting governments in addressing sustainable development challenges, promoting practical solutions and long-term strategies, and developing education and scientific cooperation in this area.

SDSN expressed its readiness to cooperate with SDSN Uzbekistan and develop joint initiatives in Central Asia.
