Sustainable Development Goals Month Launched

On August 6, a conference on "Sustainable Development Goals: A New Stage in National Development" was held in the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, officially launching the Sustainable Development Goals Month.

The event was attended by members of parliament, heads of ministries and departments, representatives of the UN Office in Uzbekistan, the leadership of the Secretariat of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, non-governmental non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs, and representatives of the media.

The conference was opened by Tanzila Norbayeva, Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Commission for Monitoring the Implementation of National Goals and Tasks in the Field of Sustainable Development until 2030.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Senate emphasized that the Sustainable Development Goals are not just an international obligation for Uzbekistan, but have become an important part of the national development program aimed at improving the quality of life of the population, leaving no one behind, and creating a solid foundation for future generations. He also noted that, at the initiative of the President, the Sustainable Development Goals have been fully aligned with the "Uzbekistan - 2030" strategy, and the legal and institutional framework for their implementation has been strengthened.

It was reported that hundreds of events will be organized throughout the republic within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals Month. In particular, parliamentary hearings, sessions of local Councils, scientific and practical conferences, forums, round tables, open dialogues, and meetings in neighborhoods are planned. Special media projects will also be implemented in the media and social networks.

It is noted that the main goal of the month is to increase the population's sense of ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals, to communicate the results of the reforms being implemented to the general public, and to unite efforts towards common goals.

National and foreign experts speaking at the conference noted that Uzbekistan has adopted 16 national Sustainable Development Goals and 126 targets, all of which are aligned with the priority areas of the "Uzbekistan - 2030" strategy.

As a result of the reforms implemented in Uzbekistan, positive progress has been achieved in more than 70 percent of the Sustainable Development Goals indicators, and the targets set for 45 percent have been fully met.

In particular, the poverty rate has decreased from 17 percent in 2021 to 5.8 percent by the end of 2025. Preschool education coverage has increased from 27.7 percent to 78 percent, and higher education coverage from 8.3 percent to 47.7 percent. In addition, the share of women in public administration has reached 35 percent, in the Legislative Chamber this figure is 38 percent, and in local councils - 32.5 percent.

It was noted at the event that as a result of the reforms carried out, Uzbekistan ranked 65th out of 167 countries in the 2026 Sustainable Development Goals Index.
