Russia threatened Lithuania with nuclear weapons

If Lithuania deploys nuclear arsenals on its territory, Russia's nuclear weapons will be aimed at that country. This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov.

"It is clear that these weapons will be aimed not to the West, but to the East — that is, at us," Interfax quotes Peskov as saying.

The Kremlin representative emphasized that if nuclear weapons aimed at Russia appear in any territory, then the territory of that country will also become a target for Russian nuclear weapons. According to him, this will be a very serious turn in terms of escalation and tension of the situation.

In June 2026, the Lithuanian government confirmed that it was conducting negotiations on deploying nuclear weapons on its territory. According to the Financial Times, this refers to American bombers capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

According to the current article of the Lithuanian constitution, the deployment of weapons of mass destruction or foreign military bases in the country is prohibited. For this reason, Lithuanian officials have expressed readiness to discuss amending the constitution to lift this ban.

The 1997 agreement between Russia and NATO stipulates that the alliance has no intention, plan, or reason to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of new members. After the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow deployed its tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.

Earlier, it was reported that NATO had developed a three-stage plan for a potential Russian attack. These measures will be applied in the event that Moscow invades the Baltic states. The alliance decided not to keep these military plans secret in order to deter the country and prevent an attack.
