Renowned fencer and former NOC chairman Sobir Ruziev has died.

Sobir Ruziev, a renowned fencer, 1980 Olympic silver medalist, world champion, and former chairman of the NOC of Uzbekistan, has died at the age of 73.

Sobir Ruziev, a distinguished fencer and former head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Uzbekistan, has passed away at the age of 72, the country's NOC announced.

Ruziev made history as the first foil fencer to win medals at both the World Championships and the Olympic Games. His athletic career included medals at the 1974, 1975, and 1981 World Championships, including two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he won silver in the team event.

From 1992 to 1995, Sobir Ruziev headed the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports. From 1995 to 2003, he headed the NOC and the Fencing Federation of Uzbekistan.

For his achievements, Sobir Ruziev was awarded the Silver Order of the International Olympic Committee in 1998 and the Gold Order of the Association of National Olympic Committees in 2002. He was also awarded the honorary title of "Honored Athlete of the Republic of Uzbekistan."
