Legendary fencer Sobir Ruziev has passed away.
Sobir Ruziev, a distinguished Uzbek fencer who won a silver medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, has passed away at the age of 72. He also won two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal at the World Championships. Ruziev previously served as Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan and was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Athlete of the Republic of Uzbekistan."
Sobirjon Sabitovich Ruziev was born on June 15, 1953, in the village of Belovodskoye, Frunze Region. He was a Soviet and Uzbek fencer who was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. From 1992 to 1995, Ruziev headed the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Physical Culture and Sports, and from 1995 to 2003, he served as President of the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan.
Sobir Ruziev began his fencing career in Tashkent. He competed in the 1976 Olympic Games, where he placed fourth in the individual event. At the Moscow Olympics, he also placed fourth in the individual event, but won a silver medal in the team competition.
In the team event, Ruziev twice became a world champion, once a vice-champion, and once a bronze medalist.
In 1980, he became a USSR champion.
After retiring from fencing, Sobir Ruziev headed the Uzbekistan Fencing Federation and the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan.
