Putin promised to provide comprehensive assistance to Uzbekistan within the framework of the CIS presidency
Uzbekistan can count on comprehensive support from Russia. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the meeting of the leaders of the CIS countries held in the city of Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, RIA Novosti reports.
He announced that Uzbekistan will become the next chair of the CIS organization starting from January 1, 2027. Putin wished Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev success in this task.
"Today, a decision was made that the relay of the CIS presidency will pass to Uzbekistan starting from January 1 of next year. I wish Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev success in this important mission," Putin said.
The CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) was established in December 1991, after the collapse of the USSR. The organization's members are states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. The basis of cooperation consists of trade, transport, security, humanitarian, and cultural ties. The supreme body is the Council of Heads of State, and its headquarters is located in Minsk.
The presidency of the CIS rotates annually. The presiding country determines the priorities of the year, organizes Commonwealth events, and hosts the summit of heads of state.
Uzbekistan will chair the CIS starting from January 1, 2027, and will host the next summit in Bukhara. This will be the country's second presidency: Uzbekistan chaired the Commonwealth for the first time in 2020.
