PISA founder warned of a dangerous trend in education

The founder of the world-famous PISA system, Andreas Schleicher, noted that the level of students' knowledge is declining in many countries. This week, analyses reflecting the level of knowledge and literacy in reading, mathematics, and science of 15-year-old students in 91 countries were published.

"We see that not only is basic literacy declining among students, but also the ability to compare information, critically analyze information, and work with complex texts is weakening,"

said Andreas Schleicher in an interview with Euronews.

The listed skills are precisely what is vitally necessary when working with artificial intelligence (AI). The weakening of comparison and critical analysis skills could cast a shadow over the students' future.

According to the PISA founder, excessive use of AI technologies is negatively affecting the knowledge level of teenagers. During the study, it was found that students who do not use AI have higher levels of knowledge and literacy. Therefore, the expert emphasized the need for world education systems to use AI not merely as consumers, but based on creative and critical thinking.

"Some countries are using AI to force students to think deeply, to search for the right questions, and to provide powerful tools that help them study better... We need to move from using AI in a consumerist manner in the education system to a more creative use,"

said Andreas Schleicher.

The results of the PISA tests also showed that the gap among European countries is growing. For example, a decline in student achievement was observed in countries like France, Germany, and Spain. Interestingly, small European countries recorded positive results. For instance, Estonia ranked first in Europe in reading, mathematics, and science tests, and also entered the top ten globally.

"This is a bright example of a country that is mastering the digital world cautiously, but very thoroughly and productively,"

said Schleicher.

Speaking about the future of education, the leading expert emphasized the need to focus on abilities such as making ethical decisions and being able to navigate complex human relationships.

He noted that students must not remain passive consumers of education, but on the contrary, must become active participants in the learning process.

The PISA founder said that to improve results, it is important to increase the responsibility of teachers and parents.

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a program that assesses the literacy and ability to apply knowledge in practice in reading, mathematics, and science of 15-year-old students in countries around the world. These tests are organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in cooperation with leading international scientific organizations.

According to the results of the PISA 2025 international assessment program, Uzbekistan scored 438 points in science, ranking 48th among 91 countries and education systems.
